BIAs are designated for marine species protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). <\/SPAN>This <\/SPAN>includes <\/SPAN>c<\/SPAN>etaceans \u2013 whales, dolphins and porpoises<\/SPAN> and <\/SPAN>also migratory marine species that are listed as <\/SPAN>threatened<\/SPAN><\/A>.<\/SPAN> <\/SPAN>BIAs<\/SPAN> <\/SPAN>are areas used by protected marine species for carrying out critical life functions.
