<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>This dataset defines the eligibility of areas in Australia for the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program. The dataset is a 500m buffer around the ABS SUAs.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>The Significant Urban Areas (SUA) represent significant towns and cities of 10,000 people or more. They are based on Urban Centres and Localities (UCLs) but are defined by the larger Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s). A single SUA can represent either a single Urban Centre or a cluster of related Urban Centres. Using SA2s to define SUAs ensures a wider range of more regularly updated data is available for these areas (such as Estimated Resident Population), compared to UCLs where only Census data is available.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

The ABS Significant Urban Area (SUA) boundaries were created using various sources including the Geoscape digital datasets and ABS boundaries, zoning information from state planning agencies and imagery. State borders are aligned to Australia’s Land Borders dataset produced by Geoscience Australia and available from http://pid.geoscience.gov.au/dataset/ga/140044. Positional Accuracy: Positional accuracy is an assessment of the closeness of the location of the spatial objects in relation to their true positions on the earth's surface. The positional accuracy includes: - a horizontal accuracy assessment - a vertical accuracy assessment. Positional accuracy for ABS boundaries is dependent on the accuracy of the features they have been aligned to. ABS boundaries are aligned to a number of layers supplied by Geoscape with an accuracy of +/- 50 mm. Geoscape layers and their positional accuracy are as follows: - Transport and Topography +/- 2 metres in urban areas and +/- 10 metres in rural and remote areas; - CadLite +/- 2 metres in urban areas and +/- 10 metres in rural and remote areas; - Administrative Boundaries: derived from the cadastre data from each Australian State and Territory jurisdiction; - Greenspace and Hydrology: 90% of well-defined features are within 1 mm (at plot scale) of their true position, e.g. 1:500 equates to +/- 0.5 metre and 1:25,000 equates to +/- 25 metres. No "shift" of data as a means of "cartographic enhancement" to facilitate presentation has been employed for any real world feature. Precision: Boundary coordinates have been rounded to 8 decimal places, equivalent to 1.1132 mm at the equator. All ABS boundaries have been generalised to 5 cm with a 7.5 cm shared boundary tolerance. The Urban Rivers and Catchments Program eligible boundaries are to defined as a buffer of 500m around Significant Urban Areas. To generate this, the ABS SUA boundaries were dissolved into SUA and non-SUA polygons. The SUA polygons were buffered by 500m and internal holes and non-urban islands were removed. The non-SUA polygons were clipped where they overlapped with the buffered SUA polygons. The buffered SUA polygons and the clipped Non-SUA polygons were merged into a single Eligible and Ineligible dataset and then clipped to the coastline. This coastline was the outermost extent of the GeoScience Australia 1:100k coastline and the coastline of the original ABS SUA/Non SUA data. Smaller non-SUA Islands were removed and larger non-SUA islands were simplified to increase mapping service rendering speed.
