<idAbs>

This raster dataset NVIS7_0_AUST_PRE_MVG_ALB provides the latest summary information on Australia's pre - 1750 native vegetation, which has been classified into Major Vegetation Groups. It is in Albers Equal Area projection with a 100 m x 100 m (1 Ha) cell size. A comparable present (Extant) raster dataset is available:

- NVIS7_0_AUST_EXT_MVG_ALB .

For this update, Version 7.0, the pre 1750 datasets were unchanged from the previous Version 6.0.

The extant datasets for Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory have been updated. An automated, data-driven procedure, followed by thorough manual checks, was undertaken to make any necessary updates to MVG/MVS assignments for New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania. Conversely, Queensland directly provided the MVG/MVS assignment for the state. For Version 6.0, updates were implemented for the Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland, including a completely revised MVG/MVS assignment for Queensland, and MVG/MVS re-assignments were made where applicable to the remaining states/territories, with the exception of Tasmania. For Version 5.1, the extant dataset for Tasmania was updated, and gap-filling work was completed for the NSW extant dataset. Some of the rulesets underpinning the assignment of MVGs and MVSs were also updated to improve consistency for their allocation. Version 5.0 substantially standardised the lookup tables (NVIS5_0_LUT_DETAIL and NVIS5_0_LUT_AUST_FLAT). For more detail refer to the associated lookup tables. Previously, Version 4.2 updated NSW. For version 4.1 most agencies supplied data to the update.

This product is derived from a compilation of data collected at different scales on different dates by different organisations. Please refer to the separate Key Dataset map showing scales of the input datasets 'NVIS7_0_KEY_DSET_xxx'. Gaps in the NVIS database were filled by non-NVIS data, notably parts of South Australia.

Major Vegetation Groups were identified to summarise the type and distribution of Australia's native vegetation. The classification contains different mixes of plant species within the canopy, shrub or ground layers, but are structurally similar and are often dominated by a single genus. In a mapping sense, the groups reflect the dominant vegetation occurring in a map unit where there are a mix of several vegetation types. Subdominant vegetation groups which may also be present in the map unit are not shown. For example, the dominant vegetation in an area may be mapped as dominated by eucalypt open forest, although it contains pockets of rainforest, shrubland and grassland vegetation as subdominants. A number of other non-vegetation and non-native vegetation land cover types are also represented as Major Vegetation Groups. These are provided for cartographic purposes, but should not be used for analyses. The (related) Major Vegetation Subgroups represent the dominant vegetation groups in the dominant stratum, along with the dominant shrub or ground layer, and are available as separate raster datasets:

- NVIS7_0_AUST_EXT_MVS_ALB

- NVIS7_0_AUST_PRE_MVS_ALB.

For further background and other NVIS products, please see the links at: http://www.environment.gov.au/land/native-vegetation/national-vegetation-information-system.

</idAbs>

<othConsts>This version is based on spatial updates for TAS, QLD, NSW and the ACT and changes to MVG/MVS allocation for all remaining states/territories. Previously, for Version 6.0 spatial datasets were updated for Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory. Non-spatial updates were made to all these states except WA, due to problems encountered with non-aligning mosaicked Map Units between the NVIS database and the non-spatial data supplied on the WA government portal. Hence, the original non-spatial data was used in conjunction with the new spatial data for this state. For version 5.1 improvements were made to the NVIS data from Tasmania with some gapfill work completed for NSW, utilisings v5.0 data for all other states. Collection scale, more-detailed vegetation floristic and structural data and/or more-consistent interpretations were improved for a number of states/territories. It would not be valid to compare this version quantitatively with earlier versions of NVIS. Non-vegetation and non-native vegetation major vegetation classes are not to be used in quantitative analyses.</othConsts>

<conExpl>The positional accuracy depends on the source data. Data sources used and the quality of the mapped information should be obtained from the separate key map for the NVIS extant theme (see Key Layers data).
The input data were checked by EDAB (ex-Gaia, ex-ERIN) for the geographic coordinate system and correct datum. For vector data, the GDA2020 datum was adopted as standard but any input data using GDA94 or WGS84 was re-defined as GDA2020.
Final rasters for MVGs were then reprojected to Albers Equal Area for ease of analysis. Further information on particular datasets is available from the data custodians.

<conExpl>The information is based on the data in the National Vegetation Information System, other mapped vegetation information, expert advice and key references. The Major Vegetation Groups (MVGs) represent an aggregation of the vegetation structure, floristic and association information that attempts to unify variations in nomenclature, anomalies in assigned ecological dominance and helps overcome any bias in the data sourced from different projects.
A detailed profile of each MVG is available: <http://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/publications/nvis-fact-sheet-series-4-2>.

<conExpl>A total of 33 MVGs have been identified, and all are present in this extant (present vegetation) theme dataset. The Version 7.0 Major Vegetation Group rasters were finalised in 2024 for internal use and for external download. This version has been created in Albers Equal Area projection. A separate raster of estimated pre-1750 Major Vegetation Groups is also available for comparison with this dataset.
Previously, parts of New South Wales, South Australia, QLD and the ACT and Victoria have had extensive areas of vector "NoData", thus appearing as an inland sea. The No Data areas were dealt with differently by state. In the ACT and SA, the vector data was 'gap-filled' and attributed using satellite imagery as a guide prior to rasterising. Most of these areas comprised a mixture of MVG 24 (inland water) and 25 (cleared), and in some case 99 (Unknown). The NSW, QLD and Vic 'No Data' areas were filled using a raster mask to fill the 'holes'. These areas were attributed with MVG 24, 26 (water & unclassified veg), MVG 25 (cleared); or MVG 99 Unknown/no data, where these areas were a mixture of unknown proportions. Review of satellite imagery may clarify land use in these areas if needed.
The National Vegetation Information System will be updated as vegetation mapping data becomes available.

<statement>NVIS Version 7.0
--------------------------------
For this update, Version 7.0, the pre 1750 datasets were unchanged from the previous Version 6.0.
The present (extant) Spatial datasets were updated for Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania with necessary updates to interlinking non-spatial data. The VICTA tool (an automated, data-driven procedure with embedded rulesets) was used to assign MVG/MVS for New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania. For Queensland, updates were made predominantly to the MVG/MVS allocation as supplied directly by the state, with the existing Level 6 to Level 1 hierarchy mostly remaining unchanged from the existing database. However, a total of 643 L6 to L1 descriptions were updated in accordance with the Regional Ecosystem technical descriptions on the Qld Government portal. For New South Wales, there was an entire update to both the spatial and non-spatial data (using the most recently available SVTM data as supplied by the state's data custodians). Tasmania was updated for this version using TASVEG 4.0 and ACT was updated using the ACT Vegetation Map as supplied by the data custodians. For the remaining states and territories, the NVIS Version 6.0 spatial and non-spatial data were reused.
NVIS Version 6.0
--------------------------------
Spatial datasets were updated for Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory. Non-spatial updates have been made to all these states except WA, due to problems encountered with non-aligning mosaicked Map Units between the NVIS database and the non-spatial data supplied on the WA government portal. Hence, the original non-spatial data has been used in conjunction with the new spatial data for this state. For Queensland, updates were made predominantly to the MVG/MVS allocation as supplied directly by the state, with the existing Level 6 to Level 1 heirarchy mostly remaining unchanged from the existing database. However, a total of 567 L6 to L1 descriptions were updated in accordance with the Regional Ecosystem technical descriptions on the Qld Government portal. For the remaining states and territories the Version 5.1 spatial and non-spatial data was reused.
The VICTA tool (an automated, data-driven procedure with embedded rulesets) was run to make any necessary updates to MVG/MVS assignments for WA, VIC, NT, SA and NSW, followed by necessary manual QA checks. This resulted in some changes to L6 and L5 descriptions. Any changes made to the existing L5/L6 descriptions were verified by the corresponding state/territory contacts. NVIS Version 5.1
--------------------------------
For this update, the extant dataset for Tasmania has been updated, with gapfilling work being completed for the NSW extant dataset. Some of the rulesets underpinning the assignment of MVGs and MVSs have also been updated to improve consistency for their allocation. NVIS Version 5.0
--------------------------------
This update, Version 5.0, has substantially standardised the lookup tables (NVIS5_0_LUT_DETAILxxxx and NVIS5_0_LUT_AUST_FLATxxxx). The changes include: * Removal of nearly 8000 vegetation descriptions
* Assignment of dominant growth form for every description
* Assign L5 vegetation description where there was only L6 data
* Reinterpret all L1 to L4, in relation to the Australian Vegetation Attribute Manual v6
* Integrate classification of other cover types
* Update level of detail column
The changes have not directly changed the MVG or MVS assignment.
Geoprocessing v7.0
--------------------------------
At v7.0, new vector data was supplied by NSW at 1:25,000, for ACT at 1:10,000, QLD at 1:100,000 and Tasmania at 1:25,000. For the remaining states and territories the data is unchanged from v6.0 all datasets were converted to GDA2020 from GDA94. All datasets were clipped to the GA2004 coastal boundary. Some areas were created during this process and were given the NVIS ID of the polygon with which they shared their longest border or the NVIS ID corresponding to "unknown" if there were no adjoining polygons. Various slivers and overlaps were removed.
Geoprocessing v6.0
--------------------------------
At v6.0, new vector data was supplied by SA at a scale of 1:100,000 in the NE corner of state (mainly Cooper and Eromanga Basin), ACT at 1:10,000, QLD at 1:100,000 and WA at 1:250,000. For the remaining states and territories the data is unchanged from v5.1.
Geoprocessing v5.1
--------------------------------
At v5.1, new vector data was supplied by Tasmania at a scale of 1:25,000. For the remaining states and territories the data is unchanged from v5.0.
Geoprocessing v5.0
--------------------------------
At V5.0, the input vegetation data were provided from over 100 individual projects representing the majority of Australia's regional vegetation mapping over the last 50 years. State and Territory custodians translated the vegetation descriptions from these datasets into a common attribute framework, the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS Technical Working Group, 2017). Scales of input mapping ranged from 1:25,000 to 1:5,000,000. These were combined into an Australia-wide set of vector data. Non-terrestrial areas were mostly removed by the State and Territory custodians before supplying the data to the Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN), Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Each NVIS vegetation description was written to the NVIS XML format file by the custodian, transferred to ERIN and loaded into the NVIS database at ERIN. A considerable number of quality checks were performed automatically by this system to ensure conformity to the NVIS attribute standards (NVIS Technical Working Group, 2017) and consistency between levels of the NVIS Information Hierarchy within each description. Descriptions for non-vegetation and non-native vegetation mapping codes were transferred via CSV files.
The NVIS vector (polygon) data for Australia comprised a series of jig-saw pieces, each up to approx 500,000 polygons - the maximum tractable size for routine geoprocesssing. The spatial data was processed to conform to the NVIS spatial format (NVIS Technical Working Group, 2017; other papers). Spatial processing and attribute additions were done mostly in ESRI File Geodatabases. Topology and minor geometric corrections were also performed at this stage. These datasets were then loaded into ESRI Spatial Database Engine as per the ERIN standard. NVIS attributes were then populated using Oracle database tables provided by custodians, mostly using PL/SQL Developer or in ArcGIS using the field calculator (where simple).
Each spatial dataset was joined to and checked against a lookup table for the relevant State/Territory to ensure that all mapping codes in the dominant vegetation type of each polygon (NVISDSC1) had a valid lookup description, including an allocated MVG. Minor vegetation components of each map unit (NVISDSC2-6) were not checked, but could be considered mostly complete. Each NVIS vegetation description was allocated to a Major Vegetation Group (MVG) by manual interpretation at ERIN. The Australian Natural Resources Atlas (https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/publications/nvis-fact-sheet-series-4-2) provides detailed descriptions of most Major Vegetation Groups. Updates will be made to the site in future to include the 3 new MVGs created at V4.1. There are a total of 33 MVGs existing as at V4.1 and V4.2. Data values defined as cleared or non-native by data custodians were attributed specific MVG values such as 25 - Cleared or non native, 27 - naturally bare, 28 - seas & estuaries, and 99 - Unknown.
As part of the process to fill gaps in NVIS, the descriptive data from non-NVIS sources was also referenced in the NVIS database, but with blank vegetation descriptions. In general, the gap-fill data comprised (a) fine scale (1:250K or better) State/Territory vegetation maps for which NVIS descriptions were unavailable and (b) coarse-scale (1:1M) maps from Commonwealth and other sources. MVGs were then allocated to each description from the available descriptions in accompanying publications and other sources. Previously, parts of New South Wales, South Australia, QLD and the ACT and Victoria have had extensive areas of vector "NoData", thus appearing as an inland sea. The No Data areas were dealt with differently by state. In the ACT and SA, the vector data was ‘gap-filled’ and attributed using satellite imagery as a guide prior to rasterising. Most of these areas comprised a mixture of MVG 24 (inland water) and 25 (cleared), and in some case 99 (Unknown). The NSW, QLD and Vic ‘No Data’ areas were filled using a raster mask to fill the ‘holes’. These areas were attributed with MVG 24, 26 (water & unclassified veg), MVG 25 (cleared); or MVG 99 Unknown/no data, where these areas were a mixture of unknown proportions.
Each spatial dataset with joined lookup table (including MVG_NUMBER linked to NVISDSC1) was exported to a File Geodatabase as a feature class. These were reprojected into Albers Equal Area projection (Central_Meridian: 132.000000, Standard_Parallel_1: -18.000000, Standard_Parallel_2: -36.000000, Linear Unit: Meter (1.000000), Datum GDA94, other parameters 0).
Each feature class was then rasterised to a 100m grid with extents to a multiple of 1000 m, to ensure alignment. In some instances, areas of 'NoData' had to be modelled in raster. For example, in NSW where non-native areas (cleared, water bodies etc) have not been mapped. The rasters were then merged into a 'state wide' raster. State rasters were then merged into this 'Australia wide' raster dataset.
At V5.0 and V5.1 and V6.0 the same geoprocessing methods were undertaken as V4.2.
MVG Legend
--------------------------------
The MVG legend was adapted from an ArcView 3 legend file from the original NVIS. It was modified to suit the current classification and saved as ArcGIS "layer" files to suit both vector and raster data types. The order of MVG classes in the legend needs to be re-organised manually to conform with the SORT_ORDER field as provided in the Raster Value Attribute Table (VAT).
