Abstract:  This dataset maps Strategic Assessment areas listed under section 146 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC Act), whereby the Australian Government Environment Minister may agree to assess the impacts of actions under a policy, plan or program including but not limited to: - regional-scale development plans and policies - large-scale industrial development and associated infrastructure - fire, vegetation/resource or pest management policies, plans or programs - water extraction/use policies - infrastructure plans and policies - industry sector policies Within this context a strategic assessment normally applies to multiple natured projects which would otherwise be assessed on a case-by-case basis under Part 9 of the EPBC Act. A strategic assessment is a collaborative assessment process between the Australian Government and an appropriate proponent. Proponents can include: - state governments - local governments - urban development industry - mining and resource companies.

Purpose: Strategic Assessment areas listed under section 146 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC Act)

Lineage statement: Strategic Assessment boundaries have been constructed from datasets provided or agreed to by the proponents. All areas are classified to their current status under the EPBC Act, with an approval type (ie. Under Assessment, Proposed, Agreed, Endorsed, Secured or Approved). Generally speaking boundaries are agreed to as part of the signing of the SA Terms of Reference and through the assessment process are refined. Once endorsed additional boundaries that identify such things as approved development areas and approved conservation areas are generated. As approved offset areas are 'secured' under legal mechanisms these are also incorporated into the dataset. Field Description STRATEGIC_ID A unique id for each strategic assessment. STRATEGIC_AREA Name of strategic assessment (eg. Perth and Peel region). APPROVAL_TYPE Describes the approval level that is active for an area within a strategic assessment. STATE_ABBR State the SA is situated within. SOURCE Where the data was derived from. PROGRAM_TYPE Designates whether the area is part of a Policy, Plan or Program. CONSERVATION _TYPE Designates whether the conservation area is a Reserve or Offset. AREA_CATEGORY Designates whether the purpose of the area is for Development, Conservation, or a Program STATUS Designates the status of the area (ie. Proposed, Agreed, Endorsed, Secured, Under Assessment) APPROVAL_TITLE Describes the Approval Title assigned to the area (in most cases assigned by the respective State Government) AREA_HA Area of the polygon in Hectares
