In January, the Minister for the Environment established the Wildlife and Threatened Species Bushfire Recovery Expert Panel to inform the delivery of the Australian Government’s response to the fire events, including priority emergency actions to support impacted animals, plants, and ecosystems, as well as medium and long term responses required to support the recovery of Australia’s environment. To support the Expert Panel’s deliberations the Department saw a need to filter the National Indicative Aggregated Fire Extent Dataset (NIAFED) [1] given the regularity of fire in northern Australia. To focus the attention of the analysis and recovery effort on the areas where environmental impacts were likely to be most significant, a southern Preliminary Analysis Area was rapidly derived, based on Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA) version 7.0 regions [2] and published in January 2020 [3].[1] http://www.environment.gov.au/fed/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid=%7B9ACDCB09-0364-4FE8-9459-2A56C792C743%7D[2] http://www.environment.gov.au/fed/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid=%7B4A2321F0-DD57-454E-BE34-6FD4BDE64703%7D[3] http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/bushfire-recovery/research-and-resources |
