Description: The Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 protects all shipwrecks and associated relics that are 75 or more years old, regardless of whether their physical location is known. More recent shipwrecks may be declared as historic under the Historic Shipwrecks Act by the Minister.
Some historic shipwrecks lie within protected or no-entry zones. These zones may cover an area up to a radius of 800 metres around a wreck site, and may be declared where circumstances place it at particular risk of interference.
This dataset represents declared protected zones, mapped from gazetted coordinate buffers or coordinate boundaries.

Description: Boundaries of the 2011 Commonwealth Electoral Divisions as provided by the Australian Electoral Commission. This dataset reflects the boundaries of a State or Territory created following periodic redistribution of electoral boundaries as required by legislation. The individual datasets collectively form the Commonwealth Electoral Boundaries. Aspatial attribution includes Electoral Division name and area.
Description: AMB is a dataset depicting the limits of Australias maritime jurisdiction as set out under UNCLOS and relevant domestic legislation. To this extent, AMB provides a digital representation of the outer limit of the 12 nautical mile territorial sea, the 24 nautical mile contiguous zone, the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone and Australias Continental Shelf, as well as, the 3 nautical mile coastal waters. Where Australia has agreements with neighbouring countries these treaty lines are also included in the data.
The dataset has been compiled by Geoscience Australia in consultation with other relevant Commonwealth Government agencies including the Attorney-Generals Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as the Australian Hydrographic Office.
Australias maritime boundaries are computed from the territorial sea baseline which has been mapped by Geoscience Australia using the most reliable information available at the time it was compiled. However, it should be noted that the territorial sea baseline supplied in AMB is not intended to be a comprehensive coastline dataset and only contains features relevant to maritime boundary determination. Basepoints that generate the zone boundaries are supplied in separate files.
Other data included in AMB are the Scheduled Area boundaries of the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1967 (Cth), individual line and point files depicting maritime boundary agreements with neighbouring countries, and polygon data of the various maritime zones supplied primarily for mapping purposes.
AMB data is clearly attributed providing information about the source material used to determine the baseline and linking the baseline with the various limits. The data is available in geographical coordinates which can be referenced to the WGS84 datum which is used on charts and by mariners more generally.
The area of coverage of the AMB data is for the whole of the Australian marine jurisdiction which includes waters adjacent to the mainland, offshore islands and External Territories. The geographical extent is approximately between the latitude limits of 7 S to 70 S and the longitude limits 40 E to 175 E.
This dataset includes the following disclaimer:
AMB data is a digital representation of the territorial sea baseline and of the outer limits of Australias maritime zones. The baseline and zones are established under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973. The data also includes a representation of the limits by which the waters adjacent to each of the Australian States and of the Northern Territory are determined under the Coastal Waters (State Powers) Act 1980, Coastal Waters (Northern Territory Powers) Act 1980 and the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1967. In the event of an inconsistency between AMB data and the baselines and limits under the legislation, the latter prevails.
The datasets include:

Description: Consistent with the Australian Government's commitment to develop a National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas, networks of Marine Parks have been proclaimed for Commonwealth waters across the North, North-west, South-west, Temperate East and Coral Sea Marine Regions. These networks build on previous Marine Protected Area proclamations, including the South-east Network declared in 2007. This data includes all marine parks managed by DOEE with the addition of the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve, which is managed by the Australian Antarctic Division http://www.heardisland.aq/protection-and-management/marine-reserve This dataset is released under Creative Commons by Attribution 3.0 Australia (CC BY 3.0). IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MARINE USERS Transitional arrangements apply to the North, North-west, South-west and Temperate East Marine Parks Networks and the Coral Sea Marine Park, until management plans come into effecton the 1st July 2018. These arrangements involve NO CHANGES ON THE WATER for marine users. Note, there are no changes to management arrangements in the marine parks that existed prior to the establishment of the new marine parks, that is, the same restrictions on activities will continue to apply even where those reserves have been incorporated into new marine parks. More information is available at www.environment.gov.au/marinereserves. This data contains spatial and contextual information about Australian Marine Parks under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth governments Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, which are managed by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy. It does not include data on MPA's in other Australian jurisdictions (e.g. the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, State/Territory parks), or Terrestrial Protected Areas with marine components (eg Pulu Keeling National Park).

Description: This dataset provides outlines for the maximum extent of geomorphic units for Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone including the offshore island terrirtories but not the Australian Antarctic Territory. These data were compiled as part of Geoscience Australia's integrated digital information system to provide improved accessibility and knowledge relating to the environmental managment of Australian's oceans resources. The geomorphic units are to be used as surrogates for benthic habitats and can be best applied to the construction of bioregionalisations of the seabed. The data set also includes the name of units in the attribute table, where known, the source(s) of the names, feature codes, province codes, as well as the area and perimeter of each unit. Dataset Authors are : A. Heap, P. Harris, L. Sbaffi, V. Passlow, M. Fellows, J. Daniell, C. Buchanan.

Description: Amended May 2009 re voids; copy of Zoning within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park effective 1st July 2004
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) was established in 1975 and covers an area of approximately 345,000 square kilometres. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was subsequently accepted for inclusion upon the World Heritage List in 1981, meeting all four of the natural heritage criteria: geological phenomena, ecological and biological processes, aesthetics and natural beauty, and biological diversity (including threatened species).
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 provides for the establishment, control, care and development of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Since the gazettal of the first area (or Section) of the Marine Park in 1983, the Marine Park has been progressively increased to its present area by the addition of new Sections. The Amalgamated Great Barrier Reef Section (the AGBR Section) was proclaimed under subsection 31(1) of the Act in 2003 (Gazette No S119 dated 21 April 2004).
This dataset is a representation of the boundaries described in the schedules of the 2003 Zoning Plan for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP). The Zoning Plan identifies 8 different zones within the marine park and sets out the purposes of use for each zone. The zones are:
GU - General Use Zone HP - Habitat Protection Zone CP - Conservation Park Zone B - Buffer Zone SR - Scientific Research Zone MNP - Marine National Park Zone P - Preservation Zone Commonwealth Islands Zone For further information regarding marine park zoning please refer to publications on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) website: http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/

Description: The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2012 provides both spatial and text information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for continental Australia. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current to 31 December 2012. This is the eighth version of the database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
CAPAD - Marine, provides both spatial and text information about off-shore protected areas in both state and commonwealth waters. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current for 31 December 2012. This is the sixth version of the CAPAD- Marine database, with previous versions published in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010. CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area:
"A protected area is an area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means" (IUCN 1994).
The Australian Government Department of the Environment (DOE) publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at http://www.environment.gov.au/topics/land/national-reserve-system/science-maps-and-data/capad-protected-area-data
This version of CAPAD 2012-Marine is a public version of CAPAD 2012-Marine- data ("CAPAD 2012-Marine-external") is available for non-commercial use through the CC-BY licencing model. It DOES NOT contain protected area data from Victoria - due to the licencing arrangements currently in place. The "CAPAD 2012-Marine-external-restricted" dataset is available to non-commercial users (eg. NGO's, university researchers, private indivduals) and is password protected. The password can be provided by contacting parks.metadata@environment.gov.au and stating what the data will be used for. If commercial users wish to access the "CAPAD 2012-Marine-external-restricted" dataset an approach needs to be made to the individual data suppliers. CAPAD 2012-Marine-external-restricted and CAPAD 2012-Marine-external spatial data are available download from the Discover Information Geographically (DIG) website: http://www.environment.gov.au/metadataexplorer/explorer.jsp

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MARINE USERS – TRANSITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS
The process for developing management plans has been completed for the five Commonwealth marine reserve networks declared around Australia and the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve. Until the new management plans come into effect transitional management arrangements are in place. Under these transitional arrangements, there are no changes "on the water" for users in the new areas added to the Commonwealth marine reserve estate. If people hold an existing approval to undertake activities within Commonwealth marine reserves or the now-revoked Coral Sea Conservation Zone, they are able to continue to operate under the terms of the existing approval. No additional administrative requirements apply.
The management plan for the South-east Network came into effect on 1 July 2013 with the management plans for the South-west, North-west, North and Temperate East Networks and the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve coming into effect on 1 July 2014. More information is available at http://www.environment.gov.au/topics/marine/marine-reserves
