Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: This dataset was represents marine features associated with the Australian Marine Parks Network. It includes and classifies 'emergent' and 'submergent' features, such as: islands, rocks, dry reefs (emergent features); and, submerged reefs, shoals (submergent features). Features are further classified based on their geographical relationship to a given reserve. Geographical categories include 'within', 'closely associated with' and 'near' park. Note that for emergent features within parka comprehensive approach was used. This approach included digitising (hand-drawing) every individual feature represented on relevant nautical charts. For submergent features within parkor any type of feature closely associated or near parka more ad-hoc approach was taken. For this reason, features within these categories ('submergent', 'closely associated' or 'near' should be considered indicative only. In addition to features digitised from nautical charts, the data have been collated from a number of existing sources, including SDE and Marine team layers..
Description: This dataset is a compilation of seamounts and guyots collated from a variety of sources (see below). The dataset is intended for use in relation to Australia's network of Marine Parks and is limited to features within the Australian exclusive economic zone (EEZ), except for specific instances where Australian-specific source data extended beyond the EEZ boundary. Data sources Where source datasets overlapped, features from the most reliable sources have been used over least reliable. Order of import was as follows, based on preceived reliability/recency: 1. World seamount geomorphic feature layer (Harris, et al 2014) (features intersecting EEZ) (N:\Marine\data\bioregionalisation\geofeatures\world\data\Seamounts.shp). 2. World guyot geomorphic feature layer (Harris, et al 2014) (features intersecting EEZ) (N:\Marine\data\bioregionalisation\geofeatures\world\data\Guyots.shp). 3. MARINE_SDE.geomorphic_features (GA - A. Heap, P. Harris, L. Sbaffi, V. Passlow, M. Fellows, J. Daniell, C. Buchanan) (Defn query: FEATURE in ( 'seamount/guyot')). 4. Offshore seamounts (A. Heap, P. Harris, L. Sbaffi, V. Passlow, M. Fellows, J. Daniell, C. Buchanan.) (I:\Marine\rmp\east\kefs\data\archive\offshore_seamounts.shp). 5. Coral Sea seamounts (N:\Marine\data\bioregionalisation\3dgbr_geomorph\shape\coralsea_seamount.shp). 6. Tasmanian points (converted to polygon) (J. A. Koslow,*, K. Gowlett-Holmes, J. K. Lowry, T. O’Hara, G. C. B. Poor3, A. Williams (2001). Seamount benthic macrofauna off southern Tasmania: community structure and impacts of trawling. Mar Ecol Prog Ser 213, pp111-125) (N:\Marine\work\seamounts\data\seamounts.gdb\seamounts_tas). For additional seamount coverage, refer to N:\Marine\work\seamounts\data\seamounts.gdb\seamounts_outside_EEZ.
Description: Consistent with the Australian Government's commitment to develop a National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas, networks of Marine Parks have been proclaimed for Commonwealth waters across the North, North-west, South-west, Temperate East and Coral Sea Marine Regions. These networks build on previous Marine Protected Area proclamations, including the South-east Network declared in 2007. This data includes all marine parks managed by DOEE with the addition of the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve, which is managed by the Australian Antarctic Division http://www.heardisland.aq/protection-and-management/marine-reserve This dataset is released under Creative Commons by Attribution 3.0 Australia (CC BY 3.0). IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MARINE USERS Transitional arrangements apply to the North, North-west, South-west and Temperate East Marine Parks Networks and the Coral Sea Marine Park, until management plans come into effecton the 1st July 2018. These arrangements involve NO CHANGES ON THE WATER for marine users. Note, there are no changes to management arrangements in the marine parks that existed prior to the establishment of the new marine parks, that is, the same restrictions on activities will continue to apply even where those reserves have been incorporated into new marine parks. More information is available at www.environment.gov.au/marinereserves. This data contains spatial and contextual information about Australian Marine Parks under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth governments Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, which are managed by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy. It does not include data on MPA's in other Australian jurisdictions (e.g. the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, State/Territory parks), or Terrestrial Protected Areas with marine components (eg Pulu Keeling National Park).
