Service Description: The Combined: Biodiversity values and representativeness v1.0 raster (250 m resolution) represents relative scores across terrestrial Australia categorised into percentile-based thresholds that highlight areas of comparatively higher importance to protect. It was generated using a reproducible MCDA workflow implemented in Python and ArcGIS Pro. The workflow includes: Criterion 1: Integrated species diversity, endemism, threatened species and ecosystems, habitat connectivity, and ecosystem services. Inputs included national biodiversity datasets and ecological integrity indicators (e.g. Habitat Condition Assessment System (HCAS), National Connectivity Index (NCI). Criterion 2: Applied Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative (CAR) principles to assess ecosystem representation and protection across IBRA regions using National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) MVGs and the Collaborative Australia Protected Areas Database. Combined: Criteria 1 and 2 were combined by summing the scores of each layer and converted to be out of 100. Values in Criterion 1 that were between 0 and 49% (0 to 49% category) were excluded from the model before combining Criterion 1 and 2 layers. The excluded values were assigned a value of 6000 to allow easy identification. Note: The excluded values do not contribute to either Criterion 1 or Criterion 2 in the final combined surface. The final raster reflects areas where the above criteria are met with scores of biodiversity values and representativeness out of 1000. Higher scores represent areas with higher biodiversity values and low representativeness and protection. Protected areas are assigned a value of 4000 and excluded values are assigned a value of 6000. Identifying biodiversity value and potential to enhance the representativeness of Australia’s Protected Areas using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Version 1.0. that describes the data and methods is available at: https://erin.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6510ec40d81c43cda8d44e86b81adce2Criterion 1 Inputs: 1. Ecosystem servicesHCAS Optimised SLGA Products - Available Volumetric Water Capacity to 1m (250m) HCAS Optimised SLGA Products Topsoil & Subsoil Aggregated Soil Attribute Surfaces for Total nitrogen, Total phosphorous and Soil organic carbon (250m) 6. Habitat condition and connectivityHabitat Condition Assessment System (HCAS) 1988 to 2024 (90m) National Connectivity Index (NCI) 1988 to 2024 (90m) Criterion 2 Inputs: Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia - Regions Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia - Subregions National Vegetation Information System Pre -1750 MVG (100m) National Vegetation Information System Extant MVG (100m) Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database - Terrestrial Caveats The analysis only uses national data, which may have variable quality and availability across the country. Some of this data is derived from models with their own inherent uncertainty and levels of accuracy that should be considered when using this output. Outputs of this analysis should be considered alongside regional and/or local scale information, particularly when incorporated in the decision-making process. Species distribution models were used to derive multiple input datasets used in this analysis (e.g. species density and regional endemism). These datasets represent different information and use different methodology to derive results. This analysis uses the published Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database 2024, which does not include areas protected since 30 June 2024. There are caveats associated with the datasets used in this analysis. Please refer to individual datasets for further information.
